Selecting the Best Domain Name for your Website

In this video, we're going to be talking about selecting the right domain name for your website. We're going to be putting so much time and effort and energy into our website over the next several months or even years, we want to make sure that we do it right.

The success of a website begins with the proper selection of a domain name. It's important that we start on the right foot. Having the right domain name can make all the difference in your Google Ranking. I'm actually going to show you how we do this and show an example of actually going through the process but before that I want to discuss a few points and then we'll review those points as I'm actually showing you.

There's actually four points and the first one is...

1. Before selecting your domain, do diligent keyword research we want to make sure the you do your keyword research first. 
   
2. Selet the domain that contains the exact match keyword and we'll talk about that a little bit more.
3. Your first choice should be a .com, second choice a .org and third choice .net. In terms of search engine ranking, where Google will place your websites, a .org actually ranks the best followed by .com followed by .net. But I'm going to put .com as your first choice simply because that's the one that's easiest for people to remember, that's what they think of first, etc.
   
4. Pick a domain name that is short and easy to spell.

If we come to Google, and we type in keyword tool,The first one that comes up is a great tool to use. Let's pretend that we are an accountant in Denver. What we see here is a whole list of different search terms that people type in. The most popular one is accountant then accountants, accountants salary. Now one thing over here, if you uncheck board and check exact, that's going to give us an exact match domain name or exact match keyword that we could use for our domain name. It's a lot better, it's a lot more accurate.

The next thing that you want to do that's helpful is just click on this column header here and it will organize it according to the most search volume. you see that cpa has the most search volume. Now what your going to want to do is search through all this keywords and certainly type in more phrases that relate to your business or that relate to your website and pick up the good ones. If you notice, you can actually download it to a spreadsheet.

Normally I would use the download feature and I'd come up with a list of hundreds. But for the sake of this tutorial I'm going to keep it to the short list here. Then what I'm going to do is copy it a couple of times, and now I'm going to add denver before that, colorado before those keywords. The what we can do is we can just highlight all of those, you can use any domain service you like. I'm not a big fan of the company Godaddy but their domains are cheap. They do one thing where they can do bulk domain name registration and that's what we want. If we come and click on the box and click paste, and paste all those keywords or keywords phrase. The only ones that we want to check are the .com, .net and .org and hit search. First, it tells us all the ones that have been taken already and not available But if you come down here you'll see a list of domains that are available. I'm going to highlight all of these and paste in another noteped. Now you can go through all this and really think about which one sound the best, which one do you like the best.  coloradocpa.net or coloradocpa.org that's one awesome. That's ones short it makes a lot of sense. CPA has huge search volume, you can go after the whole state of colorado. Just in this,a quick glance, I'm going to say that one is very powerful you might wanna buy the colorado.net as well so nobody else can get that, but I'll put your main one as the .org because it has a higher search ranking even in a .com according to Google.

I saw also some great ones as well. this denvertaxreturns.org and .net are fantastic. Now, denvercertifiedpublicaccountant.com is great and you can get the .com, but that one is pretty long. It's going to be hard for people to type in that whole thing. There's a lot of good choices here. You might even pick this one coloradotaxservicecom. You can name your business that ColoradoTaxService. You've got a whole bunch of options and this are all great choices. To be honest, with the short list that we had, I didn't expect that many that were good but there's some great ones. I would say colorado.org has the most value for search engine optimization, but theres some great ones in their and your only going to pick one to put your website on. You can have other domain names the when people type in they forward but if you try and do search engine optimization for two different domain names, you going to do double the work. Hopefully that makes sense.

Now let's review what's been done and I just had a thought that I bet somebody watching this is now and accountant he's going to go purchase some of the domain names here. The first point I mentioned was that we needed do diligent keyword research. We did a little bit, I would suggest that you do a lot more that I did in this video, come up with a lot more phrases. I just picked Denver and Colorado but you might wanna pick other cities or other smaller cities in your area just depending on how competitive it is. In the case here, colorado's available, denver's available so you could think about that a little bit more in relation to your business.

The second point was select the domain name that contains the exact match keyword. I pointed out that my favorite one here was coloradocpa. If it was coloradocpas, that would not be an exact match because we saw that cpa  is what get searched for the most. Where cpas has an s in it, it's a little bit different.

Let's say Accountant is the one that has the huge search volume, but coloradoaccounting was available like it is here, it's not an exact match. We want to have an exact match of a keyword that has the best search volume. You'll wanna make some comparisons and go from there.

The third point would be first choice should be a .com, second .org, third .net and in this case here there is a couple of .com, this coloradotaxservice.com that's a fantastic .com and this coloradocpa.org is fantastic as well. And then one that's short and easy to spell, coloradocpa.org is fantastic, you can't really beat that one right there.
